Early Life and Roots
Born Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay on June 22, 1974, in Madras (now Chennai), he grew up under the direct influence of the creative arts. His father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, is a prolific Tamil film director, and his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, is an accomplished playback singer and Carnatic vocalist.
Tragedy touched his early life when his younger sister, Vidhya, passed away at just two years old—a loss that deeply impacted him. Vijay attended Fathima School and later Balalok School. While he enrolled at the prestigious Loyola College in Chennai to pursue a bachelor's degree in Visual Communication, his magnetic pull toward the silver screen led him to drop out early to fully commit to an acting career.

1992–2002: Debut and Early Romance Roles
Vijay began as a child actor in several of his father's films before debuting as a lead actor at age 18 in Naalaiya Theerpu (1992). Though his initial films faced lukewarm responses, his major breakthrough came with the 1996 romantic drama Poove Unakkaga. It established his charm and comedic timing, leading to a string of highly successful romance-centric hits like Kadhalukku Mariyadhai (1997) and Thulladha Manamum Thullum (1999).
2003–2022: Masala Megastardom & Social Conscience
The year 2003 marked a radical transformation in Vijay’s career. The massive success of the action-masala film Thirumalai rewrote his on-screen persona from a romantic boy-next-door into a larger-than-life action hero. This was cemented by the historic success of Ghilli (2004) and Pokkiri (2007).
By the 2010s, Vijay began choosing scripts infused with distinct political and social undertones. Blockbusters like Thuppakki (2012), Kaththi (2014), Mersal (2017), and Sarkar (2018) saw him playing the "angry young man" fighting corporate greed, corruption, agricultural exploitation, and flawed healthcare systems. Consolidating the Base
Vijay's political vehicle did not appear overnight. In 2009, he converted his vast network of fan clubs into a structured social welfare organization called the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI). Through VMI, he silently funded extensive grassroots philanthropic activities across Tamil Nadu for over fifteen years, including disaster relief, educational scholarships, and free food distribution.
The Launch of TVK
In February 2024, Vijay made the watershed announcement that he was retiring from cinema to dedicate himself entirely to public life. He officially launched his secular, welfare-driven political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), pitching it as a transparent, progressive alternative to the dominant Dravidian parties.
The 2026 Electoral Revolution
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections proved to be a historic turning point. Running a campaign centered on social justice, women's safety, and economic equality, Vijay contested from two constituencies—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East—winning both.
The TVK secured a staggering 108 seats on its own, emerging as the single-largest party in the 234-member house. To cross the majority mark of 118, TVK formed a progressive coalition government with the support of the Indian National Congress (5 seats), VCK, CPI, CPI(M), and the IUML.
On May 10, 2026, amidst a sea of supporters at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai, C. Joseph Vijay took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Governance and Vision
Immediately after stepping into the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, Chief Minister Vijay signed three cornerstone executive orders prioritizing women's safety, strict anti-drug enforcement, and grass-roots welfare schemes, alongside rolling out 200 units of free household electricity. His administration faces the complex challenge of balancing highly anticipated populist welfare promises with the state's substantial public debt, marking the beginning of a highly scrutinized, people-first era in Tamil Nadu politics.
